Greetings from the President, April 2024

Hello Aqua Tutus,

I'm pleased to announce our club's April general meeting broke a post-COVID attendance record. There were 22 people attending in-person and another 7 attending via Zoom. Thank you all for attending, and I hope you enjoyed my presentation on basic underwater videography. Hopefully it inspired you to try shooting some video clips during your next dive.

If you haven't heard by now, please note that the club's semi-annual members night has been pushed from May to June. This gives everyone an extra month to look through your photo and/or video files and choose what to share with your fellow club members. It's always interesting to see other photographers' work, so please share what underwater images you can with the rest of us. The more the merrier.

We have a special guest presenting at the May general meeting. Brandi Mueller will talk about Bikini Atoll, the site of U.S. atomic bomb testing in the 40s and 50s. Marine life is flourishing in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Brandi will show her images and share her experience diving the wrecks. Brandi has two decades of experience as a diving professional and her work has been published in multiple national magazines, so I'm hoping we have another large turnout to show appreciation for her presentation. If you know anyone interested in diving or Cold War history, this will be an excellent presentation to invite them to join in-person or via Zoom. For more information, click Brandi Mueller's Bikini Atoll presentation.

Be on the lookout for a club survey in the next week or so. The club's board of directors would like to know what you get out of being a club member, and what you'd be interested in having the club do more of.

Thanks to those who joined member-at-large Lindsay Martin and me at Wharf II for the April dive. We had decent visibility and enjoyed seeing lots of nudibranchs, strawberry anemone, orange cup coral, and very large starfish. It's been a long time since the club dived Wharf II, and it was even better than I remembered.

This month's club dive is intended to support this year's rescue diver class. For more information, see the May 18 and 19 events in the club calendar. It's a pretty large class this year, so I'm sure Dennis will appreciate having non-students serve as diving "victims". If it's been several years since your rescue diver certificate, this would be a good opportunity to give yourself reminders of what you learned.

Warmly,

Jim Driggers
