Greetings from the President, May 2024

Hello Aqua Tutus,

Thanks to Brandi Mueller for her excellent historical research and show on the atomic testing in Bikini Atoll in the 1940s and 1950s. She clearly went through a lot of source material and put together a fascinating presentation on what worked and didn't work in the initial U.S. bomb testing after WWII, and its effects on the target ships and islands, and on the hardships forced upon the villagers who had lived on the affected islands.

Congratulations to the new crop of PADI Rescue Diver certification recipients. I and a few others helped with the class on Saturday, May 18, and some helped again on Sunday, May 19. In the last board of directors meeting, I learned nine completed the class on Sunday and one more student has almost completed the course. For those who haven't gotten their Rescue Diver certification, do consider it next time it's offered. It provides invaluable training in preventing diving situations from escalating to the point where an actual rescue is needed, and if a rescue is needed, you'll be better prepared to help one or more others in need.

The June presentation is the club's semi-annual Members Night. If you haven't submitted any photos or videos to Dave Chervin, you've about one week left. I've heard and seen a few club members bring a camera into the water with them. Please share some of what you shot, I and other club members would love to see what you saw underwater.

The July presentation is as yet to be determined. If you've seen presentations or presenters in the past you'd like to see again, please let me and the rest of the board know. We're following up with some leads, but we could use some help.

Those who attended last month's general meeting and who read my last couple monthly letters have heard me mention the upcoming club survey. I'm chagrined to say the survey has not yet gone out. The delay is my fault as I've not made the time to implement the changes to the survey that the board has urged. Hopefully, I can finish it up soon and Derek can get it out to you all. The board does welcome your opinions.

Finally, remember we'll be voting for members-at-large in the June general meeting. The positions run from July 2024 through June 2025 and were created to help club members share their opinions and what they'd like to see through their representatives--the club members-at-large. For more information about the position (and other board positions) see the Board of Directors, Elected Member & Volunteer Coordinator Duties file. The member-at-large position is an easy one with very little time required and gives you an opportunity to influence our nearly 70-year-old club.

Warmly,

Jim Driggers
