Club Dive - Pt Lobos 11-8-25

After securing reservations for eight dive teams on Saturday, deteriorating wave models winnowed our ranks to just two teams plus shore support.

Waves were out of the west, 8' at 12 seconds. We assumed that it would be a perfect day for a hike. After assessing conditions though, we found that the ridge was absorbing most of the wave energy and considered getting wet.

We deployed  and advanced free diving recon team to assess visibility, and when reports came back of 10' we figured it was worth gearing up. Jim and Derek headed out on a 0 degree heading to follow middle reef, and found that vis actually opened up to 15'-20' once you were able to get to 40' depth. Hung out with a very playful harbor Seal, saw a lone Sheepshead, Derek spotted a smaller Leopard Shark and Jim located a monster of a Cabezon who was content to have us gaze upon him for a bit.

After reaching 70' depth on middle reef we decided to head west and follow the wall back in. Here we felt the impact of the surge quite clearly - the wave movement was making its way through the ridge and reminding us of how much energy was still in the system. Interestingly, it also functioned as a navigation aid, as we could instantly tell when we passed by Cannery Rock (Doggy) and the relative calm of the cove.

King Tides made entry and exit a pleasure on the ramp. Full sun and limited wind gave us the perfect day topside.
