On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the following club members snorkeled from McAbee beach to San Carlos Beach in Monterey: Dennis Hocker, Kirstin Hamrick, Sofia Krasovskaya, myself, and the Economides family: Sharon, Tim, and Aethan. Debbie Driggers provided shore support. Due to a hurricane way south of Monterey, sea conditions were predicted to be awful with large swells and potential flooding along beaches. Actual conditions were much better.
I gave a snorkel brief at San Carlos Beach and Dennis added a few pointers. We then geared up and walked down Cannery Row to McAbee beach. Once in the water, we did a weight check to ensure no one was over-weighted, then headed out past El Torito restaurant on the point and turned right for a roughly hour long, leisurely swim past scattered kelp patches.
Sea conditions were surprisingly calm, water temperature was about 63 degrees, and visibility ranged from 15-20 feet along our swim. Everyone did at least a few free dives and a little crawling through kelp.
After the snorkel, Jim Driggers served as the victim for the club's rescue diver class at San Carlos Beach. Students practiced rescue skills for a couple hours, then everyone headed to Gianni's for some well-deserved pizza and pasta.
