Sunflower Star Lab's restoration effort
July 11 General Meeting
 
 In 2013, sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS) began devastating sea star populations, leading to kelp loss and urchin barrens. Sunflower Star Laboratory aims to develop methods to grow sunflower stars at the scale needed for recovery. More information here. 

Approaching timid sealife
August 1 General Meeting
 
Mark Strickland, a well published underwater photographer, will provide some tips for approaching timid sealife (a topic useful to all divers). Details here. 

Kelp Ecosystem Collapse Update
September 5 General Meeting 
 
Natasha Benjamin will give us an update on the state of our Kelp Ecosystems. See information (and a short video) about her film https://www.sequoiasofthesea.com/.
 

Member's night at June Meeting
had many participants
 
June was Members' Night, where all club members are encouraged to share photos and videos.  We had more members wanting to present than could be accommodated.  Next members night is November. Story here.

Dave Chervin, Dan Wilcox, Corwin Zechar and David Sheh were present to receive their diplomas, flanked by the proud Director of Training (Dennis Hocker).

Night dive at Breakwater!

Yes, July's club dive will be a night dive at the Breakwater. Details coming. Be sure to carefully read the event to be properly prepared. As always, register on the event so the POC knows you're coming and watch the discussion forum to coordinate.

Club dive and Campout Salt Point
August 9-11
 
Camp with Aqua Tutus at Salt Point! Most folks will arrive on Friday evening. We plan on diving Saturday, then enjoy a potluck cookout and campfire that night. Bonus diving on Sunday morning.

We recommend getting campsite reservations ASAP as it does book up.

Club dive Lovers 2
Sat June 8
 
Seven club members met at Lovers Cove in Pacific Grove for a combination education and activity event. Dennis Hocker, Director of Training, provided guidance on relevant scuba topics. After training, snorkeling and diving were enjoyed, followed by lunch at Gianni's Pizza. More details here.
 

Photography dive at Wharf 2

 

Oliver Edwards and David Chervin dove Wharf 2 Tuesday June 25, getting some good practice photographing the prolific life. There was a strong thermocline about 15'; the water temperature was a cold 50 degrees below! The vis was was fair at 20' depth with small to medium surge - although more than I like when shooting macro.

Club Swap Meet!

Dennis Hocker is hosting a club dive gear Swap Meet July 27, 11am to 5pm at his house. Bring scuba gear you have to donate / exchange and save some space in your  trunk to take some great stuff home. Rumor has it there will be a keg. Refreshments / snacks / food welcome.  This doc lists gear donated by a former club member. 387962 Larkspur St. Newark, CA.

Cencal awards 2 scholarships in 2024
 
 
This year CenCal had 2 outstanding applicants for their UW scholarship, so they decided to award both of them.  Each received a $2000 check, and our membership is what funds this.  Any donations to rebuild the fund are appreciated, and remember that your dues and donations are 100% tax deductible.
