Mike Bloom presents showcase of 
Philippines macro video 
 
Mike Bloom presented a tour-de-force of underwater macro video from a variety of dive sites in the Philippines at the August club meeting. In-person attendees were treated to an excellent show with stunning color, resolution, and accompanying commentary. A number of club members also attended by zoom.


September General Meeting program 
 

Randall Spangler will be presenting his anticipated program on "Assessing Ocean Models for Dive Conditions". Randall is an expert at this - he frequently publishes local diving forecasts on online forums. If you've ever wondered how some club members predict "dive conditions are looking good..." this will be the program to see.

Carmel River club dive 
September 20
 
Our September club dive will be at Carmel River state beach. This location has a variety of excellent diving (with kelp!). Please register on the event if you're attending. See the (to be created) forum for up-to-date information.

Good diving at Salt Point
Camping / Diving trip
 
Twelve tooters attended the annual Salt Point camping / diving trip with four diving. Highlights included a 1.5 hour dpv dive traveling well outside of Gerstle cove with thick schools of fish, metridia covered rocks, bull kelp covered reefs, and a wreck.

Member dives continue in August
 
Oliver dove North Monastery on his DPV visiting the sunken deep reef and venturing far North towards Carmel beach.

UC Santa Cruz students discovered the mere presence of sunflower sea stars keep kelp-hungry urchins at bay. See the UCSC article here.

Guidelines for save diving

To prevent injuries and death by propeller and vessel strikes, divers and boaters must be proactively aware of one another. Dan published guidelines in their article.

Exercise can increase
decompression risk
 
It's long been established that exercise (both before and after diving) can increase decompression risk. This can be problematic when shore diving! See Dan's article here.

Researchers spied a wild array of life, including dozens of suspected new species, in an Argentine underwater gorge that plunges twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Scientific American article here
 

Giant pacific octopus' filmed clashing underwater
 
The dramatic footage, captured off the coast of Gangwon Province in South Korean, shows one giant Pacific octopus firing a cloud of ink at another. Discover wildlife article here.
