Randall Spangler gives talk on predicting diving conditions

Randall Spangler presented "Predicting Monterey dive conditions using wave models, buoy readings, webcams and other techniques".  The engaging and humorous talk included a practical analysis of conditions for the coming weekend based on actual data and forecasts, as well as putting theory into practice.  We appreciate Randall freely sharing his trove of experience with the club. Dive Reports

Tooters enjoyed excellent diving at Carmel River state beach

Four tooters (and a tooter to be) enjoyed excellent conditions with an easy entry at  Carmel River beach. Visibility opened up on the far side of the reef. They were treated to giant nudis, rockfish, cabazon and a ling as well as abundant kelp. News article here

Member dives in September

Oliver dove several Northern Ca offshore locations with Marc Shargel late September. The diving was from Marc's boat, often on steep pinnacles 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles from shore. There was lots of life - not so much visibility, and challenging weather.

Jim and Debbie Driggers dove Bonaire for two weeks recording a Tooter worthy 20 (or 22?) dives.

Dennis Hocker dove Philippines for two weeks getting some great photos including a rare (can't remember which) species. See his News Article for details and photos.

Fritz Weiss dove San Diego with his family running into unexpectedly cold water.

Mysterious barrels off LA could be linked to all those UFO sightings!!!

Well, not exactly, but we are finding more about what's in the barrels dumped in the ocean off of Los Angeles. Some contain caustic alkaline waste that stops most life from living nearby

A breakthrough for sea stars leads to a glimmer of hope

This one's actually not click bait.

Scientists have identified the bacteria that's killing sea stars (that's causing the urchin explosion that's eating all the kelp that's starving all the abalone). Succinct Reef Check article here
