Announcements and Club News

Greetings from the President

Jim Driggers monthly newsletter is here.

David McGuire talks on shark conservation

David McGuire, founder of Shark Stewards, presented on shark conservation and the organization's work, highlighting the importance of sharks in marine ecosystems and the threats they face, including overfishing and shark finning. As usual, David shared some great shark photography.

November General Meeting program

Oliver Edwards will present a "show and tell" program on Diver Propulsion Vehicles (DPVs). He's bringing the DPV most members own to the meeting and will demonstrate it's smaller size, weight, and performance. His presentation will describe the specifications  (2 hr battery life at several times swimming speed!) how to use it, and how to handle problems. Several entertaining videos will be included.

Board of Directors Meeting
November 18

The board meeting is being held the third Tuesday this month, rather than the third Thursday. All current members are welcome to attend. See the event for details.

New newsletter editor coming...

I imagine everyone's applauding :). My time as newsletter editor is coming to an end - this will be my last issue. Derek Suring has kindly volunteered to be the new editor.  Thanks to those of you who sent me material and especially thanks to those that actually wrote news articles. The newsletter is an important method we use to keep in touch and promote the club. Did you know that our non-member mailing list is over 160 people and over 65% open their Tooters? (The open rate for members is about the same.) That speaks clearly to it's value.

Point Lobos club dive
November 8

Novembers club dive will be at Point Lobos. This stunning location offers some of the best diving in the Monterey area. Reservations are necessary to dive and are currently filled. See the Club Dive Forum to sign the waiting list.  Please register on the event and check the forum if you're attending.

Dive Reports

October club dive explored waters off McAbee

Poor conditions forced a move of the club dive to McAbee. Three tooters used two dpvs (one diver was towed) to explore McAbee pinnacle, Aquarium, and Hopkins reefs in varying visibility. A school of male sheepshead was spotted (first time i've seen a school).

Member dives in October

Oliver and Derek had an outstanding DPV dive at Point Lobos in the middle of the week. Highlights included motoring around very large pinnacles in Bluefin cove. Diving mid-week in Lobos allows one to reserve just a day ahead, ensuring good conditions.

Putting your dives on the AquaTutus website event calendar is easy and helpful. It's a great way to find club members as buddies. It helps the club by showing we're active divers, attracting prospective new members. Contact the webmaster (webmaster@aquatutus.org) for details.

Dive "Blue Friday" and avoid crowds at the mall

Gil Zeimer of Marin Scuba club sends a story about starting "Blue Friday" with details about how to join. He asks us to let him know if we are diving over Thanksgiving weekend so he can add another pin to their global map.

Cencal Odyssey newsletter

Cencal has fought for divers rights and dive site access for years. Their odyssey newsletter 11-2025 is here.

Beautiful photos of whales underwater

A freediver known as lud_adventure has posted a series of photos of whales taken while freediving (the photographer, not the whale of course!). The first two images show the whale eating a large squid.
