Club Meeting March 5th

Vince Christian of the Sunflower Star Lab will update the club with progress at the SSL since his last talk in 2024, including their recent outplanting of 48 captive-raised sunflower stars into the ocean. (Spoiler alert - it went really well and they are already planning a possible "wild" release.)

Dive Reports

Breakwater Club Dive a Success!

The club dive on Feb 7th, our superbowl scuba, went swimmingly well. Six aquatutors decided to descend at Breakwater. The day was beautiful and sunny most of the time with reports of wind while we were diving from our shore support. Those that came got lots of practice with their underwater photography so I'm hoping there will be some participants in our next members night as a result. As for the dives, the first of the morning was along the wall and visibility was about 20ft (40ft vertically). Everyone joined for a second dive in the middle reef, and this unfortunately had less visibility 10-15ft. Water temperature was 58 degrees. Despite the forecast, we had a really great day in Monterey and everyone that made the drive down, went diving. -Lindsay

The Hunt for Beto's Reef

Our plan was Hole in the Wall -> Lone Metridium -> Sea Mount -> Beto's Reef. But going directly north from Lone Metridium didn't put us directly on Beto's... Read the Dive Report for details!

Large Scale Kelp Restoration Moves Forward

In a significant win for California’s coastline, the California State Lands Commission officially authorized a new 5-year lease for the Greater Farallones Association (GFA) during its February 9, 2026, meeting. This lease is a vital green light for a large-scale kelp habitat restoration project and hydrodynamics study aimed at reviving the vanishing bull kelp forests along the Northern California coast. The project will focus on key sites including Fort Ross Cove, Timber Cove, and Drakes Bay, where GFA plans to:

Deploy Data Moorings: Install seven specialized data-collection buoys to monitor ocean conditions in real-time.

&

Test Recovery Approaches: Implement outplanting and study grids to identify the most resilient methods for kelp regrowth.

Hollis 2000 LX Regulator Recalled

Huish Outdoors has received reports of internal components within some Hollis 200LX regulator second-stages separating or fracturing before or after a dive. Some units may fail if the second stage is dropped or struck on the adjustable inhalation knob. In these cases, damage to the inlet tube assembly could render the second stage non-functional. While Hollis says no incidents have been reported during an active dive, this condition could pose a drowning hazard if it were to occur while in use. Do not dive with the affected regulator until Huish corrects the problem.
