Club Meeting June 4th

In advance of the Club Trip to the Philippines, our own Neil Benjamin will present his stills and videos from recent dives there. We are anticipating making this location the focus of our Fall Member's Night, so hopefully Neil's recent work can inspire some of our intrepid Tooters to document their upcoming sojourn.

Club Dive May 30th

Get your macro ready! Our next Club Dive will be at Wharf 2 in Monterey. With the Harbor Master's blessing we are able to wander about the pier pilings, which are always a treat for those looking to photograph nudibranches and other charismatic folk.

Club Dive June 7th

After you've rinsed your gear from the Wharf 2 dive, get ready to head to the North Coast, where Sophia will be hosting a dive on Sunday, June 7th. Location to be determined depending on conditions. Stay tuned to the Forums for more info.

Salt Point Campout 8/28 - 8/30

Our annual dive weekend on the north coast is coming up!
We are staying in the Woodside Lower Loop. Some are showing up as early as Thursday and staying until Sunday.

Dive Reports

McAbee May 8th

With the initial intent to introduce Erik to North Monastery scuppered by a serious increase in wind from the NNW (as pointed out by Spangler in a fortuitous encounter at Aquarius the day prior), our band of hardy souls meet at a comparatively placid McAbee Beach for a great day of diving.

Myself, Erik, Mark and Dan (with Dive Dog Sukha on shore support) did an initial epic survey of the reef, heading out from El Torito and dropping down in about 25'.  Headed towards the backside and pinnacle area with a northerly route and then retracing our steps in an arc.

Great kelp present as usual. Numerous fin fish and nudis. I was struck by the contrast between the backside of the reef and the shallower area closer to shore. The former had much less algae buildup, better visibility and numerous rock structures coated in strawberries. Due to the limited depth, we clocked in almost 90 minutes in dive time. Erik had a seperation but we surfaced according to protocol and rejoined (Erik performed a nice Kelp Crawl to return to group) and we returned to beach,

Entry and exits were easy and lovely. Visibility around 15' but increased the further from shore you went.

Erik and I did a second dive towards Breakwater to explore how far the reef went in that direction. Lots of old pipelines, anchor chains and abandoned equipment before we hit an extensive sand channel. Crossing it would presumably lead to the Pipeline/Metridium Fields and then on to Middle Reef.

NOAA Confirms Marine Heat Wave is Back

As recently as early April, marine scientists had hoped that the heatwave might diminish and the worst of its effects might be avoided. However, new projections released last week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show it is now expected to expand and strengthen in the months to come.

New Research Confirms that MPAs Do Work

An international study using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence revealed that many of the world’s marine protected areas, otherwise known as MPAs, are largely free of industrial fishing, upending a frequent argument among critics that these exclusion zones are merely political and performative and have little benefit.
