April Club Dive Report

On Saturday, April 9th, I led the traditional Aqua Tutus snorkel from Monterey's McAbee Beach to San Carlos Beach. Fellow club member Dave Chervin and I were joined by club prospects Walt Nissen and his friend Dan Wilcox. We walked in our snorkeling gear from our vehicles at San Carlos to McAbee and into the ocean. Sea conditions were better than forecasted, but some wave sets were in the two-foot to three-foot range. Visibility was only five to six feet with a fair bit of surge and water temperature was around 52 degrees.

I did a handful of freedives with my dive computer in freedive mode along the swim back to San Carlos. Depths ranged from 17 to 25 feet and visibility was poor through the entire water column. On the first dive I nearly broke my mask against a rock while descending and began diving with an outstretched hand as a bumper.

I was surprised by the amount of kelp along the route. All of us got some practice crawling through fairly large kelp patches.
