October 2022 So. Monastery Dive Report

David Chervin | Published on 10/21/2022
Dave Chervin, Oliver Edwards, Gary Henry, Dan Wilcox and Dan's buddy Mark dove South Monastery beach on 10/15/2022. The sea was flat with little wind and good viz of over 30'.

South Monastery boasts a robust kelp forest 100' off shore that goes out for about 200'. We went out along the edge of the reef and came back through the middle of the kelp forest at depths of 20-30'.

We saw a large number of sea anemone of various colors. Plentiful rock fish, perch, ling cod and greenlings. There were numerous abalone in cracks and a wealth of invertebrates. There were still lots of purple urchin, but they were hiding in cracks and not mowing down the kelp. We were joined mid-dive by a harbor seal who wondered what we were doing in his ocean.

We had two dives with easy entries and exits for Monastery. The conditions were good, we saw lots of marine life and generally had a ton of fun!
