October membership meeting entertainment

My family and I (Linda, Debbie, Jim) made a trip to Cabo Pulmo in Baja California Del Sur.  Cabo Pulmo is located about 60mi North of San Jose del Cabo at the southern end of Baja.  Debbie arranged for a one-week Airbnb home rental and air tickets for the middle of October 2020.

We rented a Chevy Suburban, loaded our gear and went food shopping for the weeks supply.  After driving for several hours, we arrived at the house.  It was very nice.  We went back to Cabo Pulmo  (20 minutes on a graded dirt road) and checked in for 4 days of diving starting the next morning.

The diving is in the National Park of the same name.  They said it was the oldest under water park in Mexico.  The park rangers set the dive times and places for all boat operators every day.  The dive boats are put in from the beach from trailers with a long tongue and rope because of the shallow water.  We did a shallow 1hr first dive (40ft) to check us out.  We then did our next dive with a huge school of Anchovies.  The next 3 days we repeated the process of 2 dives per day at different sites.

The video presentation is a reasonable view of what we saw.  There were the large schools of all types of fish.  Some of the “snaps” from the video follow.  I found the very large shoal of anchovies the most interesting.  The changing light patterns created by their avoiding the groupers and other predators was mind boggling.  The Golden Groupers we saw were on the last dive new to us.

Other details about the area are, these are the only living coral reefs in Baja, the water temperature runs around 80F, humpback whales, hammer head sharks and lots of smaller fish are here at different times of the year.

Diving here is expensive due to its remote location and the closest paved road is 12 miles away.  We would still go back.  There are not a lot of things to do in the area.  Linda, Debbie and Jim went birding one afternoon.  Linda got some great shots of Caracara birds, a raptor, and some other smaller birds.
