Greetings from the President, May 2023

Hello Aqua Tutus,
Thanks to Arnie, Dennis, and Oliver for sharing their videos and still images in July's semi-annual Members Night. Thanks also to Dave for handling the media presenting duties on Zoom. I'm disappointed Zoom doesn't support .wmv, files as I was looking forward to sharing a couple of my videos from Truk Lagoon, but live and hopefully learn.
The theme of live and learn continues into the June General Meeting. The entertainment will be the panel discussion Experience to Dive By, and by happenstance will feature the same three club members who showed off their underwater photography expertise last month. This month, each will share personal tips, suggestions, and encouragement to help club members and visitors dive our challenging California waters and elsewhere with a higher level of safety and comfort. Presenting this panel is one of my goals for this year, and I hope all will make a special effort to attend the June meeting on the first.
I often remind myself that my happy place--the place where I physically and mentally go to relax--is also one of the most dangerous places in the world. Scuba divers rely on their equipment and training to safely experience an alien environment hostile to those who breathe with lungs. I'm looking forward to mining the gold nuggets of wisdom from panelists whose diving experience dwarfs mine.
Finally, last month I forgot to ask for nominations for the three board members-at large-positions. Each position runs from July 1 through June 30, with elections held in June. Each board member-at-large has full voting rights. During their tenures, members-at-large are responsible for
representing the club members' interests at board meetings
serving as point of contact for at least one club dive
serving on the nomination board for the upcoming year's slate of club officers
regularly attending the club's general meeting and board meetings
As you can see, the obligation is pretty minimal. The health of the club, however, depends on volunteers able and willing to share a little of their time to support club activities and help steer the club toward better satisfying the needs and goals of the club's members. Nominations and elections will be held at the general meeting on June 1st.
Warmly,
Jim Driggers
