January 2024 Club Dive Report

January Club Dive Report

On Saturday, January 27, I again led the traditional Aqua Tutus snorkel from Monterey's McAbee Beach to San Carlos Beach. Or rather tried to; the metaphor of herding cats comes to mind.

Mark Judson and I did the snorkel and enjoyed calm sea conditions and good visibility. We were able to see the bottom 15-20 feet beneath us along our entire way back to San Carlos Beach. We saw the big pipeline that leads towards Metridium Feilds and several, smaller diameter broken pipes left over from sardine canning days of Cannery Row. There were a few giant kelp along the way but not enough to force us to crawl over any. I did a few free dives, and Mark did considerably more. Debbie Driggers provided shore support and kept our car keys safe.

Oliver Edwards helped Darek Suring with Derek's second outing with his Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) and David Sheh's first outing with his DPV. All three dove from the right side of San Carlos Beach and, over the course of two dives, visited the Breakwater Wall, the pipeline to the Metridium Fields, Metridium Fields, and the area in between. The better than average visibility Mark and I experienced extended to San Carlos Beach, and enabled the three DPV users to see how large the Metridium Fields actually are.

Finally, Jane Call and her husband, Ken, tried snorkeling in 3mm wetsuits just of San Carlos Beach. They also tried out other dive equipment they hadn't used in quite a while from their garage. I know Jane, and, I think, Ken are interested in getting back into cold water diving, so the club dive provided an opportunity for both to get wet again.

After the dive, all participants enjoyed each other's company and lunch at Gianni's Pizza.
