The Aqua Tutus General Membership meeting is open to members and prospective members the first Thursday of each month except December. Joining us in July will be Vincent Christian, a founder and lab director of the Sunflower Star Lab (SSL), a Monterey-based non-profit dedicated to supporting research and developing scalable aquaculture methods to restore sunflower stars to their historic range in California. In 2013, sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS) began devastating sea star populations along the west coast of North America, with sunflower stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) becoming locally extinct in the shallow coastal waters where they served as a keystone predator, protecting kelp forests from overgrazing by urchins. Since then, many complex kelp forest ecosystems have become low-biodiversity urchin barrens. In collaboration with universities, aquariums, and research laboratories, Sunflower Star Laboratory aims to develop methods and mobilize resources to grow sunflower stars at the scale needed for recovery. Join us to learn about the latest efforts and news at SSL and how you can help! The meeting is held in person at Round Table Pizza on Redwood Road in Castro Valley and via the Zoom link below.

POC Alan Stanek 510-200-6208 I‘ll start with the warning: The steep drop-off can create challenging entry and exit when waves are high. Enter only at the far north or far south ends of the beach. Dive with others who have experience at this beach. We are meeting at the south end. Great beach with a Northwest exposure, on Hwy 1 just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea. We‘ll meet at 9:00 AM assess conditions; if wind and wave are favorable, we‘ll do two dives here. ELSE.. we‘ll relocate. Last dive here, there was abundant kelp in the middle reef area. Hopefully the winter storms didn‘t clear it all out. The area to the south has a few large rock formations that shelter sea life. Location: Relative location is 7.6 miles from Aquarius Dive shop on Hyw 1 south. or It‘s about 1.5 miles south of Rio Rd (There‘s a Safeway on Rio Rd). or Just a few hundred yards south of the Carmelite Monastery located at 27951 California 1, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Parking area is gravel on west side of road Hwy 1. I‘m attaching images to guide you there. Park at south end of parking area. Facilities = flush toilets
