St. “Patti’s” Day Dive at Del Monte Beach
What we’ll do
Come and enjoy a different experience! St. Paddy’s Day is a day for wearing green. I’m challenging everyone to use imagine and incorporate green into your diving attire! Faith and begorrah! I would hate to have to pinch anyone!! Del Monte (DM) is the sandy beach just east of Wharf 2 (across from McDonalds). It is usually calm as it is protected by the harbor and wharf. The bottom is sandy with scattered beds of eel grass, other marine flora and maybe some kelp. While there aren’t any walls nor reefs there is plenty of marine life including sheepcrabs, perch, nudibrachs, snails, halibut, rays, skates and beds of sand dollars. DM also has a sunken sailboat and a tank (or half-track as some say) that are fun to explore. About 150-200 yards off shore is a shale reef.
DM is a great place to gain some diving experience with easy entries and exits. It is also a good place to practice navigation going between the tank and sailboat. Enjoy the calm conditions for photography and get comfortable with your camera. More information can be found online about Del Monte. The first two are articles from Bruce Watkins from two editions of CA Diving News. The other is info on MontereyScubaBoard.com.
What to bring
Scuba gear and a tarp or mat to lay gear on.
And especially something green!!
Important to know
There is a pay parking at Del Monte. However, it can fill up quickly. I suggest arriving by 8:30 am for a spot close by. However, there is other pay parking by Monterey Bay Kayaks and at Wharf 2. Gear can be dropped off at the Del Monte parking lot and then go park elsewhere. Bathrooms are located at the foot of Wharf 2.
