Purple Urchin Removal Event
November 2, 2019 @ 8:00 am - November 3, 2019 @ 1:00 pm
Recreational divers will help protect the kelp by removing as many purple urchin as possible over these two days.
The event is organized by the Watermen’s Alliance and the NorCal Underwater Hunters. We have shifted the structure to crushing the urchin. The limit of 40 gallons still applies and you still need a valid fishing license. Waivers will be available at the event.
Dive briefing at 8 am in the parking lot. All divers, non divers and kayakers are welcome.
WHEN: 8-3 on Saturday, 8-12 on Sunday. Come anytime if you can’t make the start time. End times are flexible.
WHERE: Van Damme Beach, Mendocino County. Van Damme Beach is 3 miles south of Mendocino off Highway 1.
Van Damme State Park Campground
NEEDED: We need divers and non divers too. The need includes kayaks, kayakers and land support. You don’t have to dive to help. You also don’t need to be there both days. There are usually fewer divers and kayakers on Sunday, so if you can only come one day, or don’t like a crowd, think about Sunday.
PROVIDED: Tank refills will be provided at the end of Saturday.
- A California fishing license is REQUIRED to participate in taking of urchin.
- Gear can be rented at Sub Surface Progression in Fort Bragg for scuba or freediving and kayaking. Call to make arrangements: (707) 964-3793.
